Equivalent Fractions

Definition of Equivalent Fractions

Fraction means a part of the whole. It consists of two numbers, Numerator and Denominator, for example, “5/10”, where 5 is the numerator and 10 is the denominator and the fraction 5/10 represents half of the value 10. Equivalent Fractions are fractions that have different names but represent the exact same portion of a whole. For example, 1/2 and 5/10 both have the same value of a whole and therefore, are equivalent fractions of each other.

How to Find Equivalent Fractions

We can find Equivalent Fractions of the given fraction by using multiplication or division. In the process, the numerator and denominator are both multiplied or divided by the same number, then the resulting fraction is said to be an equivalent fraction if it gives the same value of the whole. For example, if we multiply the numerator and denominator of 1/2 with the number 2 then the result would be 2/4, and 2/4 after dividing by the same number 2 becomes 1/2 and therefore is the equivalent fraction of 1/2.

Equivalent Fractions Examples

The concept of Equivalent Fractions can be further cleared by looking at some examples given below:
(50250) when its numerator and denominator are divided by 10, it gives us (525) and if we apply multiplication of 10 to (525), it gives us (50250). So we can say that both fractions (50250) and (525) are equivalent to each other.
